Senior Unit Update Week 6 Term 3

Book Week Wrap Up:
Arrrr, wonderful to see so many Senior students embrace the Book Week parade. We don’t always get such a big turn out in the upper years but this year was fanatastic. We had every thing from Grug to Dora the Explorer with many a pirate thrown in for good measure. A big thank you to all the scurvy dogs and their parents for getting on board and walking the dress up plank.

Photo Day - Wednesday
The Senior Unit crew are the first cabs off the rank in getting photos taken on Wednesday. To help make this a smooth operation, we ask that students are wearing full winter uniform (jumpers included) on arrival to school that day. As Wednesday also happens to be our PE day, students should also have their sports uniform to change into so they can go get active and sweat up a storm comfortably.

School Day / Punctuality
  • The school day begins at 8.50am.  Students who arrive after 9am are considered late and need to be signed in at the office by the parent / caregiver.   If your child is absent please ensure you advise the school by 9.30am (via phone or email)
  • The school day ends at 3.25pm.  If you need to pick up early a note to your teacher in the morning is really helpful.   Phone calls to the office are welcome, although can be delayed if other priorities come along.  Please report to the school office and sign your child out whilst your child is called to the office.

Traffic Monitor Roster
  • Please click here to view the new schedule for Term 3  Weeks 6-10
All students rostered on (including the reserve) need to arrive for their duties
  • If your child is on the morning schedule please ensure he/she is at school by 8.25am
Thanks for your help.

Senior Unit Update Week 5 Term 3

Week 5 is here and that means it's Book Week. With this there are a range of things happening in the school as we celebrate Book Week and we look forward to seeing the great costumes. Here is the news from the Senior Unit.

Book Week
This Thursday is the dress up for Book Week. We encourage Senior students to get involved and take part in the fun. On the flip side of this we want to remind you that Thursday is a formal uniform day and that it is still expected to be worn. If you dress up and stay dressed all is good, but if you need to change it is expected that you change back into formal. The message in the newsletter was mainly directed junior primary. The theme for Book Week is

"Find Your Treasure"

Numeracy
Numeracy is a consistent presence in the Senior Unit. At the moment the Year 6's are focusing on measurement and will begin measuring investigations as we explore and refine out measurement skills. Today we shared types of measurements we know and from here we will look at a range of measurement concepts including converting measurements.
The Year 7's have been working with angles and have been using angles to give directions when using a map. It will be interesting to see the treasure they find with their mapping.

Devotion
Being Book Week today we looked at the best selling book in the world, "The Bible." It was great to
discuss the Bible and we shared a number of clips about the Bible as well. Our thought for the day was from Psalms 119:105 and is a great guide for our lives. Check out the clip below

Junior Youth
There is no Junior Youth this week.

Thought for the day
If you ever feel cold just stand in a corner. They are usually around 90 degrees!

Have your say Seniors!!!! This means you!

Supporting the LOCAL COMMUNITY – TOWN OF GAWLER – YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Our school has been involved in the Town of Gawler’s Youth Development program over the last 12 months.  They are now asking for our senior students to complete this quick survey so they can provide a school holiday program this October. There is a $50 eftpos voucher up for grabs.

Get involved and let them know what you are looking for Senior Unit!

Senior Unit Update Week 4 Term 3

Well week 4 is here and there are a range of different things happening this week. Here is a taste of what is to come and what we have done.

Unit of Inquiry
In Unit of Inquiry we have been investigating energy. We have discussed about energy in natural phenomenon and the types of energy they are.
From this we have found 2 main types of energy: Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy. From this we found that all energy falls into either of these categories.

We have been looking at how humans are impacted by energy through natural disasters. For this we had a rotation of picture books which were shared. These books were about flood, drought and fire and helped to give an insight into these disasters

From this we filled in and created a brochure on the impact these disasters have on humans.
It was a great way to reflect on the impacts of disasters.

CSI Day at Faith
This Friday the Year 6's are heading to Faith college to have a look around and experience some time trying out a range of activities. Science will be a part of the day with Science week upon us. It is a great chance to see the workings of a high school. Recess and Lunch will be provided on the day by the college.

Numeracy
Angles is the focus at the moment: types of angles, measuring angles, names of angles. Through our discussion we have had some difficulty finding real world examples of angles and the knowledge of them. This has led us to investigate where angles are used in the world.
Our example thoughts
- Builders- for making things level
- Architects- when designing buildings and spaces.
- Home renovators- when making a change to a room or house.
These are a few examples..... we wonder where else angles are used.
Remember - not to argue with a 90 degree angle, as they are always right.

Final thought
Lif is too short
